Clemence Royer

Born in 1830 and lived until 1902, she was a pioneering French self-taught scholar and a major figure in 19th-century science.
She is best known for:
• Translating Darwin: She produced the first French translation of On the Origin of Species in 1862, adding her own controversial philosophical preface.
• Breaking Barriers: She was the first woman to lecture at the Sorbonne University and a prolific writer on economics, physics, and anthropology.
• Feminist Activism: A fierce advocate for women's education and intellectual independence, she was the first woman scientist to receive the Legion d'Honneur.
